Results of a recent study published in the journal Menopause has demonstrated a high prevalence of female pattern hair loss (FPHL) in postmenopausal women.

The prevalence of FPHL was examined in a cross-sectional study of 178 healthy postmenopausal women, average age 58.8 years, visiting a menopause clinic. The study also aimed to find out the risk factors associated with FPHL. Women who had recently undergone hair loss treatments were not included in the study.

More than half of the women (52.2%) had FPHL. Around 73% of women had Ludwig grade I FPHL, while 22.6% had Ludwig grades II and 4.3% had Ludwig grades III FPHL. A significant association was observed between obesity and FPHL. Women with body mass index (BMI) of ≥25 kg/m2 were more likely to exhibit FPHL with an adjusted odds ratio of 2.65. Sixty percent of the participants reported low self-esteem due to the hair loss, which increased in proportion to severity of the condition.

“Female pattern hair loss is characterized by gradual thinning at the part line, followed by increasing diffuse hair loss radiating from the top of the head.”

This study highlights the prevalence of FPHL in postmenopausal women and its impact on the overall quality of life in otherwise healthy women. Hair loss was more common in obese women. Most women also had low self-esteem. Hence, there is a need for awareness about FPHL in menopause clinics. According to the authors, early detection of hair loss and timely intervention can enhance their self-esteem and improve QoL.
